Present: Emily Harrington, Susan Gallagher, Jon Henderson, Jeff Ball, and Steve
Eiger, and David Baumbauer
Guests: Kevin Getler, The Willson Program, and Forest Bode, The Abandon Bike King
Free Bike Program – Forest Bode discussed his ideas on starting a Loaner Bike
Program. A similar program is underway in Missoula (Free Cycles Missoula). The
discussion included Kevin Getler from the Willson Program who described how he
utilizes bicycle repair and bicycles in his classroom. Forest was encouraged to solicit
unwanted bikes from the MSU Police yard and the GVBC swap. The board will revisit
this at a later meeting to decide what direction to take on this topic. Potential projects
could include:
Developing a bicycle curriculum that included 25 bikes and helmets that teachers
check out for use in heath enhancement class.
Promote a “Make A Bike” festival where abandon bikes are refurbished and the
participant learns bicycle repair and takes home a bike.
Become involved in a bike loaner program similar to Free Cycles Missoula.
Bike Route Map – Emily handed out the map. Distribution will begin at the bike swap
and continue at the Cruise Through History on May 14th.
Corrections to Bike Route Network – Write down a description of problems with
signage on your section of the route and get them to Jon by Friday, May 13th.
Cyclist’s Alert – The board discussed the possibilities of developing a way to let
cyclists alert BABAB about road hazards (i.e. storm sewer grates that can trap wheels,
debris in the bike lanes, missing signs, etc.). The city currently has a “report a pot hole”
program in place, perhaps a hot button on the BABAB web site could be added to report
hazards.
