The workshops include national speaker Mark Fenton. Cathy also announced that Dan Burden (www.walkable.org/bios.htm) will be at the Sonoran Institute’s annual meeting in Bozeman on September 8, 2006. She is also working on another event October 2nd and 3rd to bring him back for. (2) Doug announced that the Safe Trails Coalition (STC) will have open houses in Bozeman and Belgrade on May 16 to talk about their plans for safe routes in the valley. Their group has asked the city to have bicycle & pedestrian input into the transportation plan update process. The Transportation Coordinating Committee (TCC) wants coordination between STC, PTSC and BABAB. Doug was also asked about the Valley Center bicycle facility status. Currently the reconstruction will provide two 12 foot vehicle lanes with two 8 foot shoulders. On one side will be an 8 foot sidewalk and the other will have a bicycle path (size wasn’t specified). (3) Jon confirmed that for the RFP (request for proposals) for the transportation plan update, professional bicycle/pedestrian advice is required. The TCC has formed a subcommittee of eight persons (Jon is included) to review the proposals, with a June timeline for awarding the contract. (4) David B. reminded the Board about upcoming events to celebrate National Bike to Work and School Week. May 13th is the Bike Rodeo and Safety Fair, coordinated by Safe Kids. Jeff B., Dave K., and Jason volunteered to be on hand to fit and sell bike helmets. May 17, the Community Food Co-op volunteered to host a breakfast stop-off for bicycle commuters from 7 to 9 am. David B., Matt R., and David K. volunteered to represent BABAB and help out. Matt R. will get a PSA out (prepared by Jeff B.) to various media outlets. Matt J. arranged to have Steve at Summit Bike & Ski provide a free bicycle maintenance clinic on Tuesday evening (May 16) at 7 pm. (5) Jon gave an update on subdivision review, which has been light lately. Jon is preparing recommendations for the North 7th tax increment district. The Baxter Meadows planners are talking about installing shared-use paths from Cattail to Valley Center on Fowler (Davis). The Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trails (PROST) plan is still being developed. (6) There was extended discussion with all present on long-term plans for bicycle and pedestrian facilities in Bozeman. One topic was the group’s desire to have developers consider these facilities much earlier in the planning process. As details about Dan Burden’s visit(s) are clear, the Board should work to invite developers to the presentations. (7) Jon will start attending PTSC meetings to represent BABAB. Taylor mentioned that he would like to see PTSC be the driver for planning Safe Routes to Schools. (8) Jon reminded everyone that the “Center for Transportation and the Environment” presentation webcast was coming up. The webcast will be shown at Allied Engineering (Stucky and 19th) from 11 am to 2 pm. (9) Jeff K. updated the group on city-level issues of interest. The commission has passed the five-year impact fee plan. This includes bike lanes. Baxter is an example where the facilities will be installed; the street is scheduled for reconstruction in 2007. There may be some land developments south of town that BABAB should watch for so we can be sure trail plans are appropriate. Jeff mentioned that the city is experiencing a slowdown in applications for developments. Finally, the city is considering a tax on special districts for arterial upgrades. Next Meeting: June 6, 2006, 6:00 pm, Alfred Stiff Professional Building.
