The department recently received an obesity prevention grant. Core to their program is the idea that if the physical environment of kids doesn’t promote activity, then the effectiveness of other measures is lessened. Cathy has organized a kickoff for Montana’s Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) planning on June 1 & 2 in Helena. The RFP for an SR2S coordinator is out. Also, the Thunderhead Alliance (http://www.thunderheadalliance.org) is coming to Montana to help start an advocacy group. (2) Bike to Work and School Week is the week of May 15th. The Bike Rodeo and Safety Fair will be May 13th in the Bozeman Deaconess parking lot. Volunteers from BABAB will help with helmet sales and fitting. The group also discussed a breakfast/snack stop during the week for bike commuters; this has been successful in the past. David will talk with the Community Food Co-op and find out if they are interested in hosting. (3) The Critical Mass concept is gaining momentum in Bozeman. The last Friday of every month will be a ride. Organizers are insisting on helmets, safe riding, and the following of all traffic rules. (4) Emily announced the beginning of the Bozeman Bike Kitchen (www.bozemanbikekitchen.org). Plans for the future include riding advocacy and bike maintenance.
