(1) BABAB welcomes new member Chad Bailey.
(2) North 7th Project. Ralph Johnson met with BABAB to present some of the long-
range planning for the North 7th Ave. corridor, and to get input from the Board. The N.
7th corridor has been designated a tax incrementing finance district (a.k.a. “blight”), and
long-range plans include many changes to bike and pedestrian transportation. Ralph
mentioned that an area of concern is the N. 7th and Main intersection, and the block
just north of that. Existing properties are close to the road, and the road narrows
leaving little space for potential bike facilities. The Board suggested that the
intersection and the block or two north are unlikely to be used by bike commuters
regardless, and that the Villard intersection and north would be more suited for bike
facility improvements. The Board also suggested that bike facilities to the east or west
of 7th as it approaches the interstate should be considered. Ralph asked that the Board
draft a letter with specific recommendations, then send it to the group working on the
project. Jon will make an initial draft and circulate it by e-mail.
(3) Board budget for advocacy. Jon e-mailed the Commission asking about how to
request a small amount of funds for bike advocacy work. Robin Sullivan, Clerk of the
Commission, indicated that a request will be made for $5,000 to be included in the next
City budget.
(4) Fowler facilities. Jeff Krauss talked to the Board about deciding our priorities for
Fowler, especially Babcock to Durston. The Board discussed the issue and decided that
full bike & pedestrian facilities (shared-use paths and bike lanes, both sides) are
desired. The shared-use paths are however the priority. Jon will draft a position paper
to represent BABAB’s thoughts, and circulate by e-mail for Board review.
(5) Oak Street. A new subdivision on Oak west of 19th has created the ability to put
bike lanes from 19th to New Holland Ave.
(6) The need for design standards for 10 foot shared-use paths was brought up.
These could help promote their construction.
(7) Mayor Krauss mentioned that BABAB should consider bringing forward the
bike/pedestrian facility needs to county meetings and proposals.
(8) May is National Bike Month, and Bike to Work Week is May 15-19. BABABers
should come to the April meeting with promotional ideas.
Next Meeting:
April 4, 2006, 6:00 pm, Alfred Stiff Professional Building.
