I would like to comment on the City Commission preparingto vote on the $80K grant that would require the City to
work with ICE and the Border Patrol. We have seen how ICE
operates in our community. I do not think our City should be
complicit in illegally detaining individuals. We have seen acourt grant over 24 habeas corpus petitions for individuals
who were thus illegally arrested and detained. This
agreement may well result in legal liability for the City.
Also, I have seen no public notice that this agreement oraccepting this grant is coming up for a vote. If the City truly
wants to openly and honestly communicate with its citizens,
we should have had notice that it is even on the table and
should have had meetings with the Commission to explainhow this would impact the City Departments. I don't think
the City should enter into this agreement and become
subject to the demands of ICE and/or the Border Patrol.
