Dear TIF board members:
I am writing to comment on the Special Presentation Overview of the Montana State University(MSU) Innovation Campus Project. Because oral public comment will not be permitted at theconclusion of this presentation, my written comments are as follows:
The Agenda Item F.1 special presentation you will hear today from the City of Bozeman's DavidFine and MSU's Michael Veselik will no doubt extoll the virtues (sarcasm) of the MSU InnovationCampus's current tenants that are part of the U.S. military-industrial complex and that individually
and collectively are engaged in prosecuting unjust war1 (not sarcasm) against other countriesand against U.S. citizens.
These MSU Innovation Campus tenants, aka Masters of War2 are:
- Reveal Tech: Develops products that ensure “lethality” and that have been sold to the IsraeliDefense Forces—as well as biometric identification technology similar to that used by U.S. ICEagents today.
- Defense Innovation OnRamp Hub: Describes itself as the “The Local Front Door to theDepartment of War". (Sarcasm: Quite poetic, don't you think?)
- MilTech: Facilitates technology commercialization for U.S. departments, including theDepartment of War and Department of Homeland Security.
- Institute for National Security Research and Education: Conducts research in support of U.S.departments, including the U.S. DOW and U.S. DHS.
The U.S. has a long history of prosecuting unjust wars, both domestically and internationally—arguably beginning with the attempted genocide of Native Americans and continuing to thepresent day with the unjust ICE operations and the unjust war against Iran. The City of Bozemanshould not be supporting and perpetuating unjust wars by awarding $3.6 million in TIF funds tosupport the MSU Innovation Campus. The bottom line is that the City of Bozeman does not needMasters of War operating within city limits to maintain or enhance the City's short-term or long-term economic vitality.
Sincerely,Daniel Carty

1 Unjust war can be thought of as actions taken by (a) one country against another or (b) onecountry against its own citizens that fail to meet moral or legal standards for justification andtypically are driven by aggression, territorial conquest, or political domination rather thandefense.
2 Masters of War, Bob Dylan (copyright, 1963):
"Come you masters of warYou that build all the gunsYou that build the death planesYou that build the big bombsYou that hide behind wallsYou that hide behind desksI just want you to knowI can see through your masks
You that never done nothin’But build to destroyYou play with my worldLike it’s your little toyYou put a gun in my handAnd you hide from my eyesAnd you turn and run fartherWhen the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of oldYou lie and deceiveA world war can be wonYou want me to believeBut I see through your eyesAnd I see through your brainLike I see through the waterThat runs down my drain
You fasten the triggersFor the others to fireThen you set back and watchWhen the death count gets higherYou hide in your mansionAs young people’s bloodFlows out of their bodiesAnd is buried in the mud
You’ve thrown the worst fearThat can ever be hurledFear to bring childrenInto the world
For threatening my babyUnborn and unnamedYou ain’t worth the bloodThat runs in your veins
How much do I knowTo talk out of turnYou might say that I’m youngYou might say I’m unlearnedBut there’s one thing I knowThough I’m younger than youEven Jesus would neverForgive what you do
Let me ask you one questionIs your money that goodWill it buy you forgivenessDo you think that it couldI think you will findWhen your death takes its tollAll the money you madeWill never buy back your soul
And I hope that you dieAnd your death’ll come soonI will follow your casketIn the pale afternoonAnd I’ll watch while you’re loweredDown to your deathbedAnd I’ll stand o’er your grave’Til I’m sure that you’re dead."
