To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing out of concern for the poorly-thought-out removal of several (at least) mature
Cottonwood trees on the property at the northeast corner of Graf and 19th. Not only were these trees
providing important ecosystem services-- providing moisture retention, a wind buffer, habitat and
cooling to the surrounding area, but the cut up trees and slash sat in a massive pile over the winter.
They were not ground up and offered as mulch to our residents and were therefore completely wasted
after growing and serving us for close to 100 years. But not only that, now the developers are simply
burning the piles of wood. So the developers removed an important asset for carbon sequestration and
are now burning it-- creating poor air quality and releasing more carbon dioxide, adding insult to
injury.
We have to do this better. I cannot explain the heart ache I felt after having watched bald eagles and
hawks reside in those trees for decades, only to have the mature Cottonwoods suddenly cut up into
pieces, laid to rot and now watch as this asset is further disrespected and burned!
