RE: Ursus Major Cash In Lieu of Water Rights Memo
Mr. Nielsen:
The purpose of this memo is to address city code Section 38.410.110 – Water Adequacy.
The proposed project is a new manufacturing facility for Lattice Materials who has an existing facility in
Bozeman located at 516 E Tamarack Street. The proposed facility will be similar in nature to the existing
facility as a photonics manufacturing space. The new facility will contain a visitor lobby, employee amenities
and offices, a space for growing the crystals and machining, cleaning, polishing the manufactured parts.
The cash-in-lieu of water rights payment will be based upon anticipated water usage within the facility using
estimates per employee as well as design assumptions for new and existing equipment from the existing
Lattice Materials facility in Bozeman. There will be, however, several updates in the type of equipment used
in the process. The existing facility utilizes independent centrifuges and several variations of open loop
custom coolant handling setups which lose water through spillage, carryout, evaporation, and disposal.
These systems alone account for a significant portion of the water usage from the existing facility. In the new
facility, a centralized closed-loop recirculation system will be utilized which will minimize the water/fluid loss.
The cooling tower will use glycol and operate as a closed system, eliminating evaporation, blowdown, and
freeze risk. The cutting coolant system will also be recirculated through centrifuges, significantly reducing
waste and make-up water demand. The result of these upgrades is that water loss from these systems will go
from a major contributor to virtually negligible. Eliminating this waste and loss is one of the main objectives
and reasons for even building this new facility.
Also included in the analysis is the irrigation water calculations as this will be sourced from the domestic
water supply. It is expected that the average volume per year of domestic water used will be 4.929 acre-feet
for the facility with an additional 0.566 acre-ft per year for irrigation for a total of 5.495 acre-ft per year. See
