Members of the Bozeman City Study Commission: Please consider our strong recommendation that you implement a wardsystem in the city of Bozeman. · Government decisions are closer to the voter. · Specific issues are handled directly and with less involvement from thecommission. We could contact our ward representative for specificissues. The ward representative could often answer the question or settlea problem quickly and efficiently by directing us to specific city laws ordepartments that answer our question. This takes pressure off thecommission. · Direct representation: We would have someone representing us directly;our current city commission is represented by a narrow ideological basethat is radically different from that of our neighborhood. Our needs aredifferent than, say, downtown or apartment dwellers. We do not feelrepresented on the current commission doesn’t seem to listen to us andcares less that our ideas are considered. · Close accountability: The ward representative would be held directlyresponsible for their ward’s well-being. · Less expensive elections: Ward elections generally cost less thancitywide at-large elections. This allows a wider variety of candidates, including those with less financial backing, to run for office.
