HISTORY OF PROPERTY
Prepared by Crystal Alegria, The Extreme History Project, Bozeman, Montana
The property currently addressed as 1017 S.Tracy was platted within Langohr's First Addition which was filed for record on
November 17, 1950.
Katherine Fisher purchased this property on May 29, 1953 from Don M.and Florence M. Langohr and Don M. Langohr,Jr.,and
Patricia D. Langohr. She built the residence on the property in 1953 with a completion date in November of that year(The Montana
Standard,01 November 1953).The architectural plans for this residence were drawn by prominent Bozeman architect,John DeHaas
(John Fisher,Jr., Personal Communication,July 3, 2025).The architectural plans reside within the archive located at Montana State
University's Archives and Special Collections. They are located within the John N. DeHaas Papers, 1960-2004 collection (DeHaas,
n.d.).
Architect John DeHaas received a Bachelor of Architecture from Texas A and M University in 1948 and was appointed to the School of
Architecture at Montana State University in 1951. He spent his career at Montana State University, teaching until 1980 when he was
awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus in Architecture. While teaching, he became a registered architect and designed many
residences and other structures in Montana. During his career he served on the State Historic Preservation Advisory Board, the
Gallatin County Historic Preservation Board, the American Institute of Architects Historic Resources Committee, and co-founded the
Montana Ghost Town Preservation Society. In 1984, he was inducted into the AIA College of Fellows for his services in historic
preservation and for integrating that interest into his teaching to inspire his students. He authored the following publications
including, Montana's Historic Structures,Volume 1 in 1964 and Volume 2 in 1969. Footlights and Fire Engines in October of 1967,
Central Montana Ghost Town in 1975 and Ghost Towns of Montana in 1970, Uptown Butte in 1977. He died on April 7, 2011 (The
Billings Gazette, 10 April 2011). John DeHass lived next door to Katherine Fisher on south Tracy,so it was a natural fit for him to
design her residence upon purchase of the property.
Katherine Fisher was born on August 30, 1908 in Bozeman, MT to Roy W. and Mattie Gardner Fisher. She was a graduate of Montana
State University and taught school in Worden, Montana for a short time before becoming a librarian at the Bozeman Public Library
(Great Falls Tribune, 11 March 1970). (R. L. Polk&Company, 1969). Miss Fisher was the president of the Bozeman Camera Club in the
mid-1950s(Gallatin County Tribune and Belgrade Journal, 19 April 1956)and a member of the local Sacajawea Audubon Society and
served as delegate to the Audubon conference in Pacific Grove, California in 1968(Gallatin County Tribune and Belgrade Journal, 18
April 1968). Fisher retired from the Bozeman Public Library on December 31, 1969,and died in March of 1970(Gallatin County
Tribune and Belgrade Journal, 19 March 1970).
Katherine Fisher's mother, Mattie Gardner Fisher, lived in this residence with Katherine Fisher towards the end of her life. Mattie
Gardner Fisher was born on July 22, 1875 in Graham, Missouri. In 1879,when she was four years old, Mattie came up the Missouri
River with her family from White Cloud, Missouri to Fort Benton on the riverboat, Red Cloud. The river trip took forty days and it
took the family nineteen more days to travel from Fort Benton to Bozeman in a covered wagon. Her father was the founder of Waite
and Company Real Estate and Insurance. Mattie Gardner attended Bozeman schools and was in the first domestic science class at
Montana State University after which she attended two years of art school in New York City. Upon her return to Bozeman, she
worked as the art supervisor in the Bozeman schools. She married Roy Fisher on September 3, 1907 at the family home located at
301 S.Grand in Bozeman. Roy Fisher was the first horticulturalist at Montana State College(now Montana State University)and
helped plan the landscape and layout of the campus(Montana Standard-Post,07 July, 1965).
After the death of Katherine Fisher, her sister Virginia Fisher Spangler took ownership of the property on December 8, 1970.While
owning this property,Virginia Spangler did not live in the residence but rented it out to various individuals(R. L. Polk&Co., 1970-
1984).

A—Events ❑YES NO The resource is recommended not eligible under Criterion A.The residence was constructed in
1953. Research into Bozeman and the subject neighborhood did not reveal the residence to be
associated with any events, themes,or patterns significant to local, state,or national history.
B—Persons ❑YES NO The resource is recommended not eligible under Criterion B. Research into owners and
residents of the residence through directories and historic newspapers did not reveal it to be
associated with any people significant to the history of Bozeman, Montana,or the United
States.
C—Characteristics ❑YES NO The resource is recommended not eligible under Criterion C.Although the residence was
designed by locally renowned architect John N. DeHaas, the residence does not illustrate his
skills as an architect, nor a particular phase, idea,or aspect of his work. DeHaas has an
architectural portfolio with a wide variety of styles, from simple to ornate ranch homes,to
commercial structures,educational buildings,and local churches(Montana State University
2025).This residence is one of several of his simpler, residential designs and research did not
reveal that this design or this structure have been historically significant to the community.

Furthermore, although the residence features elements of the Ranch Style of architecture,
including a low, horizontal orientation,an attached garage, and a picture window, it lacks
sufficient distinctive features of the style such as wide, overhanging eaves,a minimal,
recessed front porch, and non-functional shutters. Therefore, the residence does not
sufficiently embody a distinct period, type,or method of construction and is recommended
not eligible under Criterion C.
D—Information ❑YES NO The resource is recommended not eligible under Criterion D. Research into the property
suggests that the site is unlikely to yield important information regarding a specific regional
research question.
COMMENTS
IINTEGRITY(LOCATION, DESIGN,SETTING, MATERIALS,WORKMANSHIP, FEELING,ASSOSCIATION)
The residence retains integrity of location,as it remains in its original place of construction. The residence retains integrity of setting
and feeling, as it was originally constructed in a residential neighborhood and development in the area has largely remained
residential. Integrity of materials, design, and workmanship have been impacted by replacement materials including vinyl windows
and aluminum doors. Integrity of association has been retained as a single-family structure since its construction.Although the
residence features some replacement materials, impacting integrity of design, materials, and workmanship, it continues to retain
sufficient integrity to convey its historical associations.
