Dear Commissioners, I am writing to share my concerns regarding the potential $3.6 million tax dollar allocation toward the Innovation Campus and its accrued infrastructural costs. For several years now I have heard and shared concerns that our taxpayer dollars are not efficiently or sufficiently used to alleviate issues in our community such as affordable housing and walkable/bikeable infrastructure, or used to expand public works projects such as community-owned housing, a new fire station, or an additional public library in our westward-expanding city limits. The Innovation Campus is not a public entity, and it houses private companies as its tenants. I do not wish to see my or my neighbors’ tax dollars subsidize private investment, especially not for companies such as Reveal Technology—which explicitly states one of its main goals of operation being to “enhance lethality”. It is shameful to see such ready city investment in university partnership programs that are not providing direct benefit to the local community (especially when tech jobs are inflating the AMI to deceiving levels, further contributing to a dysregulated housing market that many recent graduates, tech or not, are struggling to afford). If public funds are to subsidize university partnerships, it would be much more preferable to see partnered investment in programs that can contribute to strengthening community connection and resilience (ie. sustainable food systems) or ideating creative citywide projects that engage our student demographics (ie. architecture and community-designed housing or infrastructure). Instead, MSU is decidedly partnering with private partners to direct young professionals into war- profiteering. Between Reveal Technology and the DIU OnRamp Hub, MSU is making itself a prominent partner with the Department of War* (FKA Department of Defense). From MSU News, “The DIU OnRamp Hub brings together Montana State University, researchers and the private sector to collaborate with commercial companies and the Department of Defense*…” and “The OnRamp will serve as the DIU open front door between dual-use commercial market technology and the DoD.” Taxpayer dollars need to stop making their way into private investors pockets and portfolios. Between Bozeman Yards and the Innovation Campus, I join many Bozeman residents in echoing the frustration of seeing TIF funding subsidize projects that do not have notable public benefit.
