Dear City Commission:
Please consider an Interim Zoning Ordinance (IZO) that would pause all exterior construction work that is adding
more than 20% of square footage and any exterior demolition requests proposed within the NCOD until completion
of the NCOD design guidelines update.
Taking a stand and representing your voters who want this IZO is the prudent and ethical decision. Using “politics
as usual” (which is how I hear your reasons) and “health and safety” issues (which I hear as scare tactics with a
sprinkle of gaslighting) as excuses to not take a stand for voting residents who you represent, and side with
developers who are building for future residents (since all the housing currently being built in Bozeman is not
affordable to buy for most people already trying to make a living in the Gallatin valley) nor current residents.
An IZO is useful to prevent new development that could be in conflict with the intent and provisions of a zoning
proposal being considered now: an update to the NCOD. The intent of the NCOD is to protect and enhance
neighborhoods and ensure that new construction contributes to the character and function of the existing
neighborhood.
The NCOD for many years was largely working as intended, thus successfully promoting health, safety, and
welfare. However, due to recent disagreements on what is compulsory in the NCOD guidelines, we are currently
undergoing a city-wide discussion to overhaul the NCOD. Adopting the IZO will give us the time we need to work
through that update.
Please consider adopting an IZO to minimize conflicts with the intent of the NCOD.
Thank you for your consideration,
Standing by,
Patty McGown
