In 2025, Teton County became certified as an International Dark Sky Community, with their airport becoming the first in the world to earn a Dark Sky distinction. Communities across southern Utah are following suit. We have the chance to join them and restore Gallatin County’s remarkable Big Sky heritage. I urge the commission to adopt and promote Dark Sky measures—protecting local stargazing, supporting the health of plants, animals, insects, and people who rely on natural darkness. Preserving dark skies gives us a clearer view of the universe, cuts energy costs and emissions, and protects nocturnal pollinators, migrating birds, night predators, and even our waterways. The good news: night sky conservation isn’t difficult or expensive. Most solutions are simple—just adopt common- sense lighting policies, as you will discuss this evening. Thank you for considering leadership on this issue. A dark sky, full of stars, the moon, and planets, is a gift we can preserve for generations. Sincerely, Katherine Ord Bozeman resident
