Dear Commissioners, I would like to comment on updates to the development code. Thank you for the opportunity.
I have lived in Bozeman for 16 years. During that time it has grown immensely and with it light pollution from
businesses, parking lots, city facilities, streetlights and homes. Light pollution adversely affects peoples’ health, and
the animals, plants, insects (including nighttime pollinators) and birds we are fortunate enough to live with.
Increases in light pollution have decreased our ability to night sky wonders - planets, stars, meteors, etc. Note, a
visible and luminescent natural night sky is a birth right. Do parking lots, businesses, especially gas stations, and
streetlights need to be as bright as they are? Of course not. Modern technology can reduce the need for night
lighting without comprising safety. I urge you to update the development code to require new facilities to install
modern, light-reducing technology. Thank you, Michael G. Smith
