It’s the dark sky above it. As our population grows, we are becoming dangerously desensitized to the “light creep” transforming our nights. From the harsh glare of storage unit and sporting complexes, equipment rentals, extreme residential lighting, and over saturated signage of businesses, we are beginning to bathe our Valley in artificial perpetual noon. There is no clear scientific evidence that increased outdoor lighting reduces crime. This isn’t just an aesthetic loss for stargazers, it is an ecological crisis in the making. Our local wildlife-the birds, bats insects, that keep our ecosystem healthy, rely on darkness for survival. This includes plant life and ourselves! Migratory birds are disoriented by skyglow, while bat populations and nocturnal pollinators find their hunting and breeding patterns disrupted.
