[Please distribute to all members of the Urban Parks and Forestry Board in time for their meeting tonight. Thank you.] April 23, 2026; 11:35 a.m. Dear Urban Parks and Forestry Board: I am writing as an individual Bozeman resident to comment on Agenda item G.1 - WorkSession: Review and Discuss Urban Forest Management Plan - Draft Outline. Specifically, I am writing to comment on the Vision Statement and Mission Statement in the current draftoutline (as follows): ‎Perhaps the most important section in the UFMP update will be the Vision Statement followed by the Mission Statement. As such, it is crucial to understand the workingdefinitions of each of these two terms. (1) ‎Vision Statement vs Mission Statement (a) ‎A vision statement outlines an organization's or plan's long-term future goals and aspirational impact. The vision statement focuses on the "why" and "where" the organization or plan aims to be. (b) A mission statement defines an organization's or plan's daily operations and who it serves. The mission statement focuses on the "what" and "how." (c) A vision statement is more foundational than a mission statement because the vision statement defines the long-term destination (where are you going), while the mission defines the current purpose (what you do to get there). (2) Consequently, in the UFMP update, the Vision Statement should precede the Mission Statement. (3) My suggest wording for the UFMP's new Vision Statement is this: "The vision of the UFMP is to protect and enhance the ecological function of Bozeman's urban forest (all trees on public and private lands) and the non-consumptive, beneficial ecosystem services that Bozeman's urban forest provides to the community as a whole." (4) If the UPF supports my suggested language for a new UFMP Vision Statement, then the UPF should be able to help craft a Mission Statement to support it. Thank you for the opportunity to comment. Sincerely, Daniel Carty 213 N. 3rd Ave Bozeman, MT 59715
