Dear City Commissioners, I have spent 25 years of my life here, am raising my daughter here and I am writing to express serous concern regarding the recent increase in car - pedestrian/biker related fatalities and nearfatalities in our community. With 12-year old Elliot McCann being the most recent victim of a near fatal accident while he was out riding his bike with friends. I have personally been hit by young drivers (although age doesn't seem to be a defining factor,it was in my case) twice in the last 2 years. Speed, distraction, following too closely, anger, impatience, poor time-management...these are all a recipe for disaster when you pair it withthe average 4300 lb vehicle. Our streets should be safe for everyone, including drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, AND KIDS! Unfortunately, the current conditions are putting lives atrisk. The recent tragedies highlight the urgent need to evaluate and improve roadway safety measures. I drive past Gallatin H.S. every morning to work, and I am constantly passed by vehiclesgoing at least double the 20 mph speed limit, which is posted AT ALL TIMES. There are never police around to enforce this. Will it take another child to be severely injured or killed?Does it need to happen to someone you know or love before change happens? I urge the Commission to prioritize the following actions: 1. conduct a comprehensive review of high-risk intersections and corridors2. implement traffic calming measures such as reduced speed limits (although this doesn't seem to be effective), speed bumps, and improved signage3. increase visibility with better lighting and more pedestrian signals 4. consider enforcement strategies and public safety campaigns to promote responsibledriving. This could also be advocating at the state level for stricter rules around access to a drivers license! Preventing further loss of life and trauma for everyone involved should and MUST be a top priority. Our kids deserve better, don't you think? Respectfully, Kara Meier --
