Dear Commissioners, I realize I did not make the noon cutoff for comments on today’s Commission Meeting (4/14/26). However since this is an ongoing work of the Commission, I hope you will look at my comments for future sessions. I read Mark Egge’s letter to the editor on April 11 and feel compelled to add my support to all that he had to say. I thought he covered the issue and the need to raise the priority and financial budget very well! I have felt the need for a more proactive and speedy work to improve City locomotion by pedestrians and cyclists since I’ve been back in Bozeman in 2010. At least ten years ago there was much planning and public meetings on the Kagy improvements that are finally planned. I realize that this is mostly an MDT project and that MSU has not been a good partner in making it happen financially, but I feel the City should have been pushing hard to make it happen and so maybe now the project would have been complete instead of 4 years from now. I agree with Mr. Egge that 4 lanes is unnecessary, but that is now decided !? So the City must put more emphasis and speed on other improvement projects to make street both safe and efficient for all users. Despite Mr. Egge’s support for flashing beacons and my agreement that they are better than nothing, they have great disadvantages. One must only spend a hour watching traffic on Kagy thru MSU to see the folly! All it takes is a pedestrian or cyclist to come every two minutes and press the button for the beacon to cross to fully back up traffic and make it a major inconvenience for motorists to travel that half mile. Motorists choose routes that are fastest, so huge numbers choose to cross east/west on the Southside via College Street. Now the new City Improvement for College includes flashing beacons??? I could call out dozens of places to improve both safety and traffic flow, but I have confidence in the City staff to do this job. What is needed now is City Commission raising the priority and allocating more funds to this! I realize that money doesn’t grow on trees for the City, but proactive means you could be looking for more Public/Private ventures to raise funds. Bikefill is a good example of this. GVLT has been advocating for the past 10 years for more and safer trails/route and since I was on the GVLT Board several years ago, I know they would help! Please raise the priority and funding for Safe Travel in our Community! Sincerely, Hal Stanley 1727 Kenyon Dr. Bozeman
