I am submitting this comment to the City Commission regarding the Fowler HousingDevelopment located between Oak and Annie Streets. My home borders the very area where these four and five-story buildings are planned, and I am deeply distressed by the lack ofempathy shown for the eighteen homeowners whose backyards would be permanently shadowed by this massive project. For more than ten years, I have cherished the open spacesand the wildlife that move through this corridor. The city’s 2017 promise to preserve green space and trees is being discarded in favor of a development that is far too dense for a narrow,150-foot-wide parcel. Pushing traffic from 168 cars onto Farmall and Caterpillar—residential streets never meant for such volume—is a recipe for disaster. My safety while biking andwalking is already a concern, and this will only make it worse. These units are not truly affordable, yet they will cost our neighborhood millions in property value and lost character. We were promised a consensus-based engagement process in January, yet these separate zoning actions feel like an attempt to undermine that good-faith agreement before it can evenbegin. I am asking the city to honor its commitments, reduce the density to a maximum of eight units per acre, and ensure that any development includes a substantial roadway buffer. We need a comprehensive traffic and environmental impact study to address the very real risks of congestion and infrastructure strain before moving forward with a plan that forever altersour sense of community.
