The Rhymes of History_ A Poem to Protect Section 504 by Opal Besaw.mp4 Watch now The Rhymes of History A plea to stop the attack on Montana's disability community READ IN APP 50 years ago next month, 200 disabled activists occupied a federal building for 26 days, risking their health, safety, and livelihoods to force the government to enforce the nation’s first civil rights law for people with disabilities, Section 504. Today, the rights this law guarantees are once again at risk. Missoula writer, student, and disability activist, Opal Besaw, recorded this poem she wrote illustrating the impact of the original fight for our rights through the eyes of the people who lived it. It’s a reminder of what discrimination looked like before 504, and a warning of what it will look like again if we fail to act to stop Attorney General Knudsen’s attack on our right to live in the community, not institutions. Civil rights only survive when we defend them. Watch the poem Sign the letter in support of Section 504 Read and sign the letter Your voice matters. Your signature matters. Your solidarity matters.
