READ IN APP Sure, everyone likes to believe in power and choice and freedom of people with disabilities. We like to tell ourselves people with disabilities get to choose where they live. But if not them, at least that that families choose. Or maybe it’s “professionals” or “experts” who choose. But if you are REALLY honest, I think you may end up agreeing with me that someone else is calling the shots. What if the decisions that shape someone’s entire life, whether they stay at home, live in the community, or end up behind locked doors, are being made by people who will never meet them… and for reasons that have nothing to do with safety or support needs? In the latest Growth Rings podcast episode, I open a door most people keep firmly shut. And what’s behind it is uncomfortable. If you’ve ever wondered: why do institutions still exist, who people gets freedom while others don’t, are certain lives “too complex” for the community MAR 9 you’re going to want to hear this. And if you didn’t see the Action Alert I sent late Friday afternoon, you need to check it out. The above podcast isn’t some abstract idea, powerful people are taking actions to remove people with disabilities form our communities and we need to rally together now, more than ever.
