Theadministration backed down After national outcry, the administration reverses course and rescinds termination of thousands of contracts READ IN APP I want to start by apologizing for flooding your inbox, but this is such big news I needed to let you know about it right away. As I mentioned in our special alert yesterday, the administration sent termination notices late on Tuesday informing thousands of mental health and substance use providers that their grants were being terminated immediately. 24 hours later, late yesterday the administration rescinded that decision. They heard from communities across the country and elected officials on both sides of the aisle about how necessary these services are. This highlights the power of civic engagement, and I applaud all Montanans who let their voices be heard. Swings back and forth like this are disruptive and stressful for all involved. As several people mentioned in this NPR article, it also raises concerns about how huge decisions are being made if they can land without warning and disappear again just as fast. Here too, engagement helps. By sharing your ideas about how to improve our systems with decision makers in real time, every day, not just here or there when the legislature is in session and considering a specific bill, but sharing your thoughts with the bureaucrats in local, state, and national administrative agencies, and with workgroups of legislators and experts developing policy between sessions, you shape the future of your community. I’ll skip next week to give you a break (unless there’s another big disability related development that just can’t be ignored). David Carlson, J.D.
