Dear Commissioners,
Hello! I have been a Gallatin County resident for 15 years--most of that time I lived
in Gallatin Gateway, and now live with my family on the far West side, off of
Durston.
I have never attended a city meeting, and I do not have experience with traditional
building and development, but when I read the article by Todd Wilkinson about the
proposed building height increase downtown, it seemed like a complete no-brainer
to not allow this.
Of course most things are nuanced, and I understand that issues regarding
development are complex. I know we need affordable housing. I know we need
infrastructure to accommodate all developments. But I also know that downtown
Bozeman is a gem, and that part of why it is a gem, is because of the height of the
buildings surrounding downtown.
I am certainly not opposed to development of all kinds. It seems a natural and
necessary thing in most places on the planet. I just think it is possible with more of
an emphasis on preservation of both historic districts (and immediate surrounds) as
well as natural resources and spaces--all of which make Bozeman so wonderful and
unique.
It doesn't seem to me that we are in dire need of another looming boutique hotel or
luxury condo that doesn't serve anyone who lives here year round. It also doesn't
seem like we need these large scale buildings to be approved immediately. I don't
see why we can't slow things down and come to a reasonable solution. I'm writing
as a concerned citizen and hope you will receive these considerations with
openness.
Thank you,
Claire Gerrish
