I’m writing as someone who deeply values both our community and the wild places that make Bozeman such a special place to live. As our town continues to grow, the overlap between people, pets, and wildlife is increasing. Practices like wild animal trapping—especially near areas used by hikers, runners, families, and dogs—carry real risks. Non-target animals can be injured or killed, pets can be caught, and people can be harmed or traumatized by unexpected encounters. These outcomes don’t reflect the stewardship and care that so many of us believe in. Montana has a long tradition of respecting wildlife, not just as a resource, but as part of a shared ecosystem. There are effective, humane alternatives to trapping that protect property while reducing suffering and unintended consequences. Choosing prevention, coexistence strategies, and transparent communication helps keep both people and animals safe—and preserves the trust that makes a strong community possible. Taking steps to limit or prevent wild animal trapping around Bozeman would send a powerful message: that we value safety, responsibility, and thoughtful stewardship of the land we share. It’s an opportunity to lead with compassion while still addressing real concerns. I hope you’ll consider actions that prioritize humane solutions and community safety. I’d welcome the chance to talk more or to help connect you with resources that support wildlife-friendly approaches. Thank you for taking the time to consider this. Our choices today shape the kind of community we leave behind. Sincerely, Jill Zegarski Bozeman, MT
