Dear Commissioners, Just a short note of support for the BHOA’s support of a 60 foot height limit for future building, or if not possible, the current UDC height limit of 70 feet. The BHOA document submitted to you yesterday makes many excellent points and I don’t need to repeat them all here. The highpoints are that you as our elected officials, are “Stewards of the Land,” as all of us are here only for a short time, while the lasting legacy of our built environment will live on in perpetuity. If a developer’s project does not pencil because of height restrictions, is it the Commission’s job to create a code environment to make it so? Many of us out there would suggest, “no.” “Vertical privatization of the skyline,” as stated by John Amsden in his excellent BHOA piece, if heights go to (say) 90 feet, sums it up well. We don’t want that in downtown Bozeman, which is truly a jewel. Having lived for 3 years in Charleston, SC as a former Naval Officer, I can attest that height restrictions have worked well there in that city and have helped that locale retain its world-class status as a tourist destination, not to mention, an attractive place for locals to spend time. With solid planning and foresight, Bozeman can do the same. Thank you for your consideration. Respectfully, Jim Jim Webster Bozeman, MT Member, HPAB, (but speak soley for myself here)
