Dear Bozeman City Commission:
The Bozeman Tree Coalition (BTC) is writing to thank the Bozeman City Commission for voting
unanimously to amend BMC Chapter 38, Section 410.010.B – Natural Environment to read as
follows (approved amendments in bold text):
“The design and development of all land uses must be properly related to topography, and must, to
the maximum extent possible, be consistent with other requirements of this chapter to preserve
the natural terrain, natural drainage, existing topsoil, trees and other existing vegetation.”
We thank Commissioner Jennifer Madgic for oKering the amendments, Mayor Terry Cunningham for
strongly supporting the amendments, and Deputy Mayor Joey Morrison and Commissioners Emma
Bode and Douglas Fischer for supporting the arguments made by their fellow Commissioners to
make the vote unanimous.
Similar to the Commission, the BTC thinks the amended language will elevate the conversation
between the City’s Community Development Department and developers about the importance of
working to better protect Bozeman’s natural resources — including its urban forest — during the
development-review process and during on-the-ground construction.
Commissioners, thank you again for voting unanimously to amend BMC Chapter 38, Section
410.010.B – Natural Environment to better protect Bozeman’s natural resources.
Sincerely,
Bozeman Tree Coalition members:
Marcia Kaveney
Annemarie Sheets
Angie Kociolek

The Bozeman Tree Coalition advocates for Bozeman’s urban forest—its ecological function and the
ecosystem services it provides to the Bozeman community as a whole. Housing and trees can
coexist.
