Dear Mayor Cunningham and members of the Commission,
Sacajawea Audubon Society notes with interest that the recently adopted Sensitive Lands Protection Plan states, "On-site native plants and mature trees
should be preserved to the maximum extent possible." An excellent way to implement this laudable policy statement would be to add the word “maximum”
to the language listed in Section 38.410.010 of the UDC, so that it would read: “The design and development of all land uses must be properly related to
topography, and must, to the maximum extent possible, preserve the natural terrain, natural drainage, existing topsoil, trees and other existing vegetation.”
By including that language in the Sensitive Lands Protection Plan, the City has demonstrated its awareness of the importance of mature trees and native
habitats to birds, wildlife and pollinators and to the enjoyment of our community. Preserving viable habitat within our human-dominated landscape is one
of the most effective things we can do to support ecosystem functions and stop the steady drain of species.
SAS encourages you to make this one-word amendment to the UDC to further demonstrate your commitment to preserving, “…the natural terrain, natural
drainage, existing topsoil, trees and other existing vegetation” in and around our growing community.
