Hello City Commissioners,
As a resident of the Centennial Park Neighborhood, I urge your support for the
resident requested zoning map amendment for the Centennial Park neighborhood to
be adopted as part of the UDC.
This proposal - to zone the area RA - will ensure increased density that is consistent
with the existing neighborhood character which includes a mix of multi-family and
single family homes. This proposal represents the hard work of my neighbors who
went door-to-door to ensure everyone was aware of the proposal and had the
opportunity to discuss it when they circulated the petition. And who worked within
the process suggested by the City and Commission to bring this proposal forward as
part of the UDC revision process.
I will also note that the RA proposal for this neighborhood in the current UDC draft
will also enable existing properties (such as the quadplex across the alley from me) to
rebuild at the existing density, also in a way that preserves the existing scale and
character of the neighborhood. This is important given that the neighborhood also
includes properties such as my own with some historic value, having been owned and
built by some of Bozeman's first Black families.
I was disheartened by the Community Development Board's lack of understanding or
acknowledgement of the neighborhood's hard work to put forward a proactive vision
for this part of the Northeast neighborhood that meets both the City's need for
increased density and the neighborhood's existing character. The CDB's discussion
felt like they changed the rules in the very last inning of the game, and I urge you to
reject their recommendation to change the proposal to RB.
Thank you for the hard work and thoughtful process to engage the community in this
rewrite.
