Why is the city moving forward on the tenants right-to-counsel ordinance?
Bozeman already has a tenant advocacy organization, Bozeman Tenants United, run by our own mayor, that collects
dues from its members. Nevertheless, you want taxpayers to bear the burden and subsidize legal services for tenants.
More egregious is the city’s claim that it had a budget shortfall of 1.77 million yet now claims to have “savings” set
aside for this. This completely undermines the public’s trust.
Ultimately, this means the city is using taxpayer dollars already collected and will result in the use of more tax
dollars for lawyers to sue landlords.
This proposal shifts responsibility for the city’s own failed housing policies on to taxpayers again. Sounds similar to
the urban camping problem that ultimately resulted in taxpayer dollars being used for clean up etc…
The city is committing itself to a long term entitlement program with the use of our tax dollars.
Please prioritize core services first, such as police, fire fighters etc..with the so called “savings” before expanding
this new entitlement program.
Sincerely,
Kathy Bergevin
