I am a member of Bozeman Tenants United. I am lucky - I grew up in a financially secure home. My partner lived on
food stamps and watched his mother struggle to pay rent. I have gotten a small taste of what this was like as we
watched our rent increase by $150 in the past two years. We are paying over $1100/mo for a 500 sq ft apartment -
this is “low-income” housing. Ownership changed twice, and once the change caused the payment portal to crash,
and my partner was deemed late though not his fault. The office is never staffed, so when our heat stopped for the
third time, it took days to solve the issue. We are expected to obey every rule or lose our home, yet landlords will
not hold up their end. I have been threatened with eviction because marijuana was smelled OUTSIDE of my home - I
don’t smoke! If it had happened, I would have no way to protest, no matter how unjust. Pass the Right to Counsel
Ordinance to protect Bozeman renters and families and give us a chance to defend ourselves.
