The job of the city commission is to listen to the public and enact the sentiments of the residents. There seems to be no question that the residents of the historic district and the entire core of Bozeman is dissatisfied with the way the city is allowing development in the core of our town. Under the guise of affordable housing the historic neighborhoods are eroding. In my opinion it all started with the Black Olive. Then it seeped into the north side with “Andy Town”. Ask yourself if this has helped the affordable housing issue. My thought is no. Reading the costs or recent builds not at all. This conflict between residents and the townspeople of Bozeman began 25 years ago. It continues today. Tonight the commission has a chance to do something for Bozeman. We, the members of the community have attended and spoken at meetings, written numerous letters and hosted neighborhood walk throughs. You have hired study experts and have listened for months and months about the benefits of designating the Bon Ton area and Cottonwood neighborhood as RA. These are benefits for the whole city. Bozeman is proud of their historic homes and beautiful neighborhoods. Do the right thing. Take a move forward tonight with a RA code designation for these historic areas It shows your commitment to what historical preservation means. It shows that you listen to your community. It shows that you can do the ethical thing. Sarah Helfrich Bozeman resident of 45 years
