Image of hand holding lit match to candle Art as a candle in the darkness. We've entered that time when darkness grows. The days become shorter and colder, and the isolation of winter tests our sense of connection. We've been thinking of this as we plan the winter edition of State of the Arts, and we're looking for stories of art as a light in all that darkness. So we want to hear from you—about moments the arts have brought light into your life. Your homework assignment is this: write 100 words or less about a time art has been that light for you. It could be hearing exactly the right song at just the right moment, a photograph that forever changed how you see the world, or a perfectly written sentence that expressed precisely what you'd been feeling. It might be art you've experienced, or art you've created; tell us the ways it's been there to illuminate your life.
