IAN EMPLOYEE-OWNED COMPANY • AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER—MINORITIES/FEMALES/DISABLED/VETERANS • • • • • • • • • A traffic impact study has already been done for the Velocity Carwash development. The purpose of this report is to analyze the queuing resulting from the proposed new car wash with a drive-through tunnel in Bozeman, Montana. Study recommendations and conclusions are intended to provide guidance with respect to the drive through in the site. • . • . • . Development Description The Velocity Carwash project site is located at 3100 West Main Street within the City of Bozeman, Montana. The legal description for the lot is Gallatin County, Section 11, Township 02 South, Range 05 East, Tract 2 AS DESIG ASSRS Plat being 150' x 300' less HWRY Buronepe Annexation. The existing project site is a developed lot where the Montana Woolen Shop used to be located. Generally, the property is bordered by Main Street/Huffine Lane to the south, the mall access road to the east, Tire Rama to the north, and Owenhouse Ace Hardware to the west. The proposed Velocity Carwash has a total gross floor area of approximately 6,710 square feet (ft2) and includes a drive-through tunnel. Carwash Trip Generation Trip generation is a forecast of the number of trips that begin or end at the development site. The traffic generated is a function of the extent and type of proposed land use. There are a number of options available for estimating trip generation. This study utilized trip generation rates found in Trip Generation, 11th Edition published by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). The total estimated trip generation for the site is provided in Table 1 below. Table 1: Estimated Carwash Site Trip Generation Summary - .- -- . .- - . ..- - . . , - . , Estimated Total Site Generated Trips(Units=Number of Tunnels) Automated Carwash 1.00 355 355 710 39 39 78 39 39 78 This assumes the following from the Trip Generation Manua111 rh Edition, Institute of Transportation(ITE): Time Period Avera e Rate or Equation Weekday ADT = 9.09*PM Peak Hour (per FHWA Traffic Data Com utation Method Weekday, Peak Hour of Adjacent Street 78 Vehicle Trips Per Tunnel (50% Enter, 50% Traffic, One Hour Between 7:00 and 9:00 Exit) a.m. if open Weekday, Peak Hour of Adjacent Street 78 Vehicle Trips Per Tunnel (50°/o Enter, 50% Traffic, One Hour Between 4:00 and 6:00 Exit) .m. The proposed development generates an estimated 710 average weekday trips. The ITE does not provide AM peak hour trips however typically 50% to 100% of the PM peak hour rate can be used to conservatively estimate the AM peak hour trips. Therefore, a conservate assumption is that both average weekday AM and PM peak hour trips are 78 vehicles. Tunnel Queuing Analyses Analyses of queue storage requirements were performed for the proposed car wash tunnel. Based on data published in an article written for Car Wash Advisory, average throughput times for automated car washes may range from approximately 6 to 10 minutes. For this analysis, an estimated throughput service time of 8 minutes is used for the queue analyses. AM/PM Peak Hour Queuing - Drive thru trips - 78 trips/hour - Arrival Rate - 1.3 vehicles/minute - Average Service Time - 8 minutes - Maximum Average Queue— 10.4 - Provided Stacking — 18 Vehicles Minimum queue spacing of 20 feet and an ideal design queue spacing of 25 feet were utilized in determining queue storage requirements. The analyses determined an estimated maximum queue of approximately 10 vehicles during the weekday PM peak period based on a ninety-five percent (95%) confidence interval. . Drive-Through Queuing The analyses found that there is adequate available storage capacity for the proposed car wash during peak periods. At a minimum, the site should be able to accommodate up to 18 queued vehicles without impacting the mall access road.
