Discussion
Fiscal Year 2026 Library Operating Budget summary- A printout was provided to the
Trustees prior to the meeting. Director Gregory said that this is just a reminder of the
FY 2026 Budget that the Library Board approved last year based on the City’s new two-year budget cycle. FY26 is year two of the cycle. The Library had no changes to our budget. Gregory also highlighted the substantial annual contribution that Gallatin County makes to the Library budget for County library service due to the City-County
interlocal agreement established in the 1990’s. The contribution for FY26 is
$955,754.
4
Reports
Director’s report- Director Gregory provided her report to the Library Board prior to the meeting.
Highlights were reviewed. Gregory asked the Trustees to let her know if they had any questions.
Highlights- The Assistant Library Director interview process has begun. We are working with
City HR to do a national and regional search. The “Free Summer Lunch “program just started. It
is being funded by the Library Friends and Foundation and is in partnership with HRDC and the
Gallatin Valley Food Bank to prepare the nutritional lunches.
Correspondence highlights
• “I love the puzzle and plant exchanges! Would love paper cups for transporting plants, if
possible. Thank you.”
• “HIRE BETTER STAFF”
• “More computers!”
• “Be open to allowing a tiny library to connect even out of state; I’ve exhausted my
hometown’s library!”
• “You should rent out laptops $1 hour up to 3 to 4 hours.”
• “I wish there was read with a dog every day.”
• Patron didn’t like that she could only take 2 “Most Wanted” new books at a time. She
didn’t want to leave a note but registered her complaint verbally with Ellie in the
Children’s room.
Commission Liaison Update – Commissioner Madgic stated there has been an increase in
hateful rhetoric that the City Commissioners and City administration have received from some
members of the public recently. She commented that it’s important to disagree freely about issues
but it’s very important to be civil and kind in communication.
Friends & Foundation Report – Director Johnson stated that they have just executed a Letter
of Intent on the purchase of property on the west side of town today. There was a lot of back and
forth, but a price has been agreed upon and the next step is that the Foundation has 30 days to
present a purchase sales agreement, which then triggers a 120-day due diligence period. So,
things are moving forward. The Friends of the Library Book sale grossed around $14,000 last
weekend. It’s a little smaller than previous sales. The sale was held in the Library and space was
limited.
Adult Services and Outreach Department Head Ben Nielsen provided a presentation to the
Library Board regarding his department and what they do.
There being no further business, Trustee Mohr adjourned the meeting at 5:10 pm.

Volunteer Update
Recruitment is ongoing for new volunteer positions and additional volunteers for existing positions. Kate
Adams met with each Department Head to identify potential volunteer needs, developed position descriptions
for new roles, and started recruitment on 9 different volunteer tasks with a total of 17 vacancies. As of
September 10, 4 positions remain open. New positions include dusting, fairy garden maintenance, library
laundry, and puzzle exchange. Existing positions with vacancies include book mending, children’s room
cleaning & shelving, holds pulling, and special delivery. The volunteer onboarding process is more robust than
it has been in the past, complete with an interview before getting the background check completed by City of
Bozeman Human Resources.
New Printing Software
Our mobile printing software has recently been updated to a much more user-friendly experience. “Princh”
can be accessed on your phone or mobile device by visiting print.princh.com and entering the BPL Printer ID
108272. There is a space to upload multiple documents at once and change the settings for each document,
including changing which pages of the document you want printed.

New Hires
We welcomed three new staff members to the Public Services Department in August: Jon, Gaby, and
Mystique. Below are snippets from the September Newsletter where they answered the questions: why
they’re excited to work at BPL, why they love libraries, and a random fact about themselves. Read on to get to
know them!
Jon Gibson:
Excited to work here because… I received my degree in English Literature from the University of Alabama,
so I'm very excited to actually be gaining money from being around books instead of losing it!
Favorite things related to libraries (book, music, resource, etc.): I love stories no matter if they come as
books or movies or shows. Sci-Fi is my favorite subject, so I generally gravitate to Star Wars, Dune, and
anything by Asimov.
Random fun fact: I just married my best friend last month, so things have been very exciting lately.
Mystique Fox:
One of my favorite things about libraries is the way they allow you to learn while having fun through reading. I truly
believe that much of my success in life stems from having access to libraries throughout my childhood. Growing
up in poverty, libraries were a lifeline, completely free and filled with endless opportunities to explore subjects I
would never have encountered otherwise. They opened doors to knowledge, imagination, and a world far beyond
my immediate circumstances. Plus, let’s be honest, they have the Band of Brothers series. So, clearly, they’ve got
everything you need.
Excited to work here because… I love being part of a place that conjures wonder for people of all ages. Where else
can you help someone time travel, quantum leap into other realms, or simply spark joy in the everyday? Not many
I'd wager. That being said, I look forward to creating that experience for others as it has added such joy to my life.
Random fun fact: I have a passion for all things numbers and data analysis which as I recently learned expands
into the finance world. I love learning about stocks and can balance any budget thrown my way.
Gaby Welch:
Some of my favorite things related to libraries: Pride & Prejudice, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Wesley the Owl, The
Good Place (TV Series), and bringing the community together.
I am excited to be a part of providing resources for the community, helping patrons, and getting to know
community better. I also am excited to get to know my coworkers and learn about new books to add to my list!
A random fun fact about me is that I was a competition tap dancer as a teenager.

Program Highlights
Summer programming is off to a great start. We are continuing with
our most popular programs, adding some new ones to meet new
needs, and bringing back some summertime favorites.
• Wednesday Walks with wildlife guide Ken Sinay has returned for
another summer. This year we are doing it as an all ages program
(Emily)
• Media and Design Lab is a new program aimed at helping library
super users continue their creative journey with a new design
skill, principle, or software each week (Ben)
• Quick Cooks is a new inter-generational program happening each
Friday using locally sourced ingredients to make a quick recipe
(Emily)
• Summer Crafternoon programs kicked off with the ever popular
book binding (Liz)
• The Embroidery Machine was down for a few weeks being
repaired, but returned in time for the June intro class (David)
Outreach Highlights
Outreach efforts continue as we work to help all people know about
their Library and the wide variety of services here. We received a
grant from the Friends and Foundation Book Sale Committee to
purchase some new outreach supplies which we are hopping will
improve our capabilities at events.
• Partnered with the Friends and Foundation to host a booth at
United Way’s Non-Profit Walk downtown (Emily)
• MSU Graphic Design students toured our historical collections and
learned how to use Microfilm (and the Library catalog (Ben)
• Visited the Senior Center to share out resources that seniors can
access from anywhere (Leslie)
Communication and Branding
Megan and Ben continue to serve on the communication team, along with Ellie (YS) and Hannah (CM). As
part of these efforts Megan makes many graphic materials each month. Currently she is working toward
bringing all library print and digital materials into compliance with brand guidelines. Recently she made
several iterations of new meeting room signs which to create a consistent and user friendly experience.

Summer Learning at your Bozeman Public Library came to a roaring finale on Friday, August 15 with araucous Dragon Festival on the front plaza. We conservatively estimate that 400 kids and 400 adultsattended this two-hour celebration of children’s joy and learning. The Bozeman Fire Department talkedfire safety and kids explored a fire engine. Tinworks Art helped kids sculpt tiny clay dragons. The TrebleMakers serenaded families with bluegrass standards. Kids met a real life (puppet) dragon who dispensedmagical jelly beans. Over 25 Library staff and volunteers invited kids to build castles, taste test hot sauce, roast s’mores over dragon flames, design dragon headdresses, hatch dragon eggs, and much more at 15+play stations. It was beautiful to see the community come together to play.
