I understand that the Board is requesting a better understanding of the public’s concerns regarding the expansion of
Greek houses into residential neighborhoods. These are my thoughts on the matter.
First of all, I haven’t heard the statement of the problem this expansion is intended to solve. I worked for the City for
21 years. In that time the Greek houses experienced occasional internal problems, but disturbance complaints were
infrequent and minor. The previous location requirements worked for the community.
Those location requirements also worked for the Greeks as well. For those participating, Greek life is an important
and long standing part of college life. In addition to the sometimes rowdy gatherings, these students also participate
in community events and community service activities generating good will in the community. The rowdy
gatherings are a traditional part of Greek life. To locate these activities in the midst of residential neighborhoods
generates ill will and hostility from the immediate neighbors whose enjoyment of their property is seriously
diminished. Why set the Greeks up for discord and resentment for simply engaging in traditional activities?
Finally, you had the chance to experiment with this expansion on a small scale with the conversion of a single
family residence on Garfield. It was a disaster for the Greeks and the neighborhood. I can think of no reason why
any future intrusion into existing neighborhoods would be any different. We tried it. It failed. Let’s return to what
has worked here and elsewhere for decades.
Thank for your careful consideration of this matter.
