PRG Commercial was given an objective that required attention to detail, a preservation of history, and precision physical work. They executed on all aspects beautifully, with the end result being a truly stunning complement to our historic Emerson building. Q8: If a Project: Briefly describe the type of work completed. Please include relevant history of the structure (year built, original purpose, etc.) The project involved a complete rebuild of our north-side stairway. The original steps, dating back to the building’s construction in 1918, had deteriorated after decades of wear and exposure to the elements. Rebuilding the stairs was essential, not only to ensure safety and meet modern code and accessibility standards, but also to preserve the character of our historic space. Our goal was to reuse the original granite steps and incorporate historic design elements inspired by the stone archways found throughout the Emerson. PRG Commercial not only met these functional requirements but also brought our vision to life. They preserved the granite and added thoughtful design touches that now elevate the appearance of the stairway and the entire north entrance. The result is a stunning, welcoming entryway that blends form and function; honoring the Emerson’s past while looking confidently to its future. Q9: If an Individual or Organization : Provide a summary of contributions to local history and how they promote cultural heritage. At the Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture, working within a historic building is not just our reality, it’s central to our mission. We’re committed to preserving the original character of the Emerson wherever possible, while thoughtfully updating and renovating to meet modern standards. This stairway project reflects that balance beautifully. Reusing the original granite steps wasn’t the easier or more cost-effective option, it required great care, skill, and vision to integrate these pieces of history into a modern, safe structure. Every person who now ascends or descends the stairs quite literally walks in the footsteps of generations past; through wars, pandemics, population booms, deep freezes, heat waves, and more. The stories embedded in those stones continue with each step. The attention to detail extended beyond the steps themselves. Fred Wilson, the Emerson’s original architect, adorned the building’s archways with intricate stone carvings. Today, those same design elements are etched into the new metal handrails; an intentional tribute to his legacy and an echo of the building’s craftsmanship. We’re incredibly proud of this project and deeply grateful to PRG Commercial for their exceptional skill and dedication in bringing it to life.
