Due to years of fierce advocacy by this grassroots group of residents, the mature forest, open portion of the section line ditch, and its associated riparian area will not now be bull dozed and put in a culvert, to make way for a 5 lane road from Oak to Durston. This preserves not only the historic landscape features treasured by generations of our residents, it preserves some of the ecological function of Bozeman's urban forest ecosystem as we grow. Please include relevant history of the structure (year built, original purpose, etc.) Q9: If an Individual or Organization : Provide a summary of contributions to local history and how they promote cultural heritage. The Friends of Fowler did not just protest a detrimental project. They joined the conversation with City staff and elected officials to propose alternatives that are not only workable, but in the end will save the city money. The transportation corridor constructed will serve emergency services as needed, while respecting the trees, water, birds, and wildlife. All important parts of why this place (Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley) is special. This group has been a constructive force in the process, and are an example to us all of what can be achieved when community members are included in shaping city policy and projects. I don't have contact info for the entire group, but I do want to acknowledge that the work accomplished to honor the agricultural ditch, it's riparian area, and the mature forest, took the input and efforts of many people in the organization over years of advocacy.
