Rachel Phillips grew up in Bozeman and received a history degree from Montana State University. She joined the staff at the Gallatin History Museum in 2007, where she started the process
of digitizing museum collections and cataloging items into a database. Since that time, Rachel has enjoyed participating in many aspects of museum operation, including front desk and
admissions, tour guiding, presentations, collections management,
research services, digitization, producing the Gallatin History Quarterly magazine, and exhibit design and installation. Rachel has written and published numerous articles on local history
stories, events, and people. Her book, Legendary Locals of Bozeman, was released in 2016. In her current role as Research Director, Rachel enjoys managing the museum’s archive, library,
and photograph collections, while assisting a wide variety of researchers. Through the years, she has been honored to work with authors, filmmakers, educators, elementary through college
students, descendants of area families, and local historians. Rachel learns something new every day and treasures meeting and working with other history enthusiasts, whether they are
age 9 or 90. To her, the biggest reward is helping others uncover answers to family and local history mysteries. She is inspired by so many—past and present.
