Dear Bozeman City Commission Members,
I am writing to express my strong support for increasing the number of community gardens
in Bozeman. As a native Montanan, I moved to Bozeman last spring. Due to high rental
prices, I was unable to afford a house with a garden space, so I opted to rent an apartment
in northwest Bozeman. I love the paths and trails in this neighborhood and often wonder
what it might take to incorporate community garden spaces in parks, and along trails, in
high-density residential areas. Gardening is a part of my culture and heritage that I would
like to continue, but I need a nearby space to do so.After inquiring about a plot at a
community garden, I was told they are granted via a lottery system. This made me think
they must be in high demand! As our city continues to grow, it is crucial that we prioritize
sustainable and culturally enriching initiatives. Expanding community gardens aligns with
Bozeman's 2020 Climate Plan, addresses food insecurity, fosters cultural integrity, and
strengthens community bonds.
Alignment with Bozeman's Climate Goals
The 2020 Bozeman Climate Plan outlines a vision for a resilient, low-carbon future,
emphasizing sustainability and community well-being. Community gardens contribute
directly to this vision by promoting local food production, reducing food miles, and
enhancing urban biodiversity.
The three Bozeman community garden locations are all in the same central region of
Bozeman. As the city expands,we must look at ways to incorporate community gardens
throughout the city for easier access. I included a map of the current community garden
locations in which the areas in gray are over a mile from the current garden sites.
Addressing Food Security
Access to fresh, nutritious food remains a challenge for many residents. Inflation and the
burgeoning housing market contribute to the inaccessibility of healthy food. Community
gardens provide a local source of produce, reduce reliance on distant supply chains, and
lower food costs. Studies have shown that community gardens can reduce food insecurity
by up to 90% in impacted communities. By increasing the availability of fresh produce, we
can improve the health and well-being of our community members.
Preserving Cultural Integrity
Gardens provide culturally important foods and protect cultural heritage. They allow
individuals to grow culturally significant plants and use traditional gardening techniques. In
Bozeman, where diversity is growing, gardens can become venues for sharing and
celebrating these traditions, fostering inclusiveness and mutual respect, and building
community connections.
Building Community Connections and Improve Mental Health
Beyond their environmental and nutritional benefits, community gardens play a vital role in
strengthening social ties. They provide a space where neighbors can collaborate, share
knowledge, and build relationships. This sense of community can lead to reduced crime
rates, better mental health outcomes, and a more cohesive society.
In conclusion, expanding community gardens in Bozeman is a multifaceted solution that
addresses environmental sustainability, food security, cultural preservation, and builds
community connections. I urge the City Council to consider policies that establish
community gardening spaces throughout the city, ensuring a healthier, more connected,
and resilient Bozeman for all.
Sincerely,
Paula Diaz
