City Commissioners,
As a queer person in Bozeman, I urge you to consider adopting the pride flag as an official
symbol of Bozeman so that the flag can fly in our city—legally.
Flying the flag will show support for 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion in Bozeman. I feel welcome instores that place pride flags in their windows. They are letting me know that I matter and that
my identity is valid. Adopting the Pride flag as an official city emblem shows the communitythat the people making decisions for our city care about us.
This flag is a historical flag: it's been a symbol of the LGBTQ+ community since 1978 and has
been displayed at pride events; by businesses, towns and countries; and in people's homessince. Bozeman has flown the pride flag before and choosing not to at this opportunity sends
the message that the city isn't here for us when it really matters—when we are facing a lot ofhate and harm.
The pride flag does not replace the current city flag or the U.S. flag. And flying it is not
sending a political message—my identity is not political. Please consider why anyone wouldoppose flying the pride flag. They are likely people who do not think that I or others in my
community deserve equal rights. Please show them that Bozeman welcomes and lovesits LGBTQ+ community.
Please approve the Pride flag as an official city flag.
Thank you for considering my comments,
Megan Maier
