Dear AG Knudsen:
Last night, the Bozeman City Commission adopted the PRIDE flag as an official flag
of the city. By doing so, it is alienating MANY of our neighbors who feel strongly the
culture wars are being exaggerated and weaponized by each side in the most
undiplomatic "in-your-face" manner. There is no need to replace or add to the
American flag which represents everyone. If it hadn't dawned on the committee I
have another consideration that an equal number of people would support. It has a
swastika on it. As you are undoubtably aware (Being an educated man) it's anancient symbol that has been used for millennia across various cultures and
religions. Its origins trace back to around 10,000 BCE. The word "swastika" itself
comes from the Sanskrit word "svastika," meaning "good fortune" or "well-being".
Let's bring some of that to Bozeman.
Probably doesn't sound right to you does it? Imagine how many people feel that way
about a flag that supposedly represents everyone and inclusion but actually offends
many. Kind of like the "good fortune flag" we could offer our tax paying citizens.
Regards,
David Sankey
