Dear Mayor and Members of the Bozeman City Commission, I am writing to respectfully urge you not to adopt the Pride flag as an official city flag or to flyit in place of, or alongside, our governmental flags. While I understand and appreciate the intent to promote inclusivity and representation, I believe the role of government should be tounite us under symbols we all share—not those that may express or imply political, cultural, or ideological alignment with one group over another. The American flag and the Montana state flag are powerful, unifying emblems that represent every resident of Bozeman—regardless of background, belief, identity, or political affiliation. These are the only flags we all have in common and should remain the sole symbols flown to represent our shared civic identity. Adopting or officially promoting any other flag, no matter how well-intentioned, risks politicizing city government and inadvertently dividing our community along lines of ideologyor belief. City leadership should represent everyone equally, and that means maintaining neutrality in public symbols and spaces. Thank you for your time and service to our city. I hope you will carefully consider the long- term impact of this decision on community cohesion and choose to keep Bozeman’s officialrepresentation inclusive by staying rooted in our common, nonpartisan symbols: the flags of Montana and the United States.
