I’m writing today as a concerned citizen and local resident regarding the recent decision to
make the pride flag the official flag of our city.
This change feels sudden and without the kind of open dialogue or public input such a
symbolic decision *should* require. As someone who values the democratic process, I’mdeeply troubled that the broader community was not invited into this conversation,
especially considering how representative a city flag ought to be.
While I respect the right of individuals to express their identity, choosing a flag rooted in
representing a specific group based on sexual orientation or gender identity does NOTreflect the shared values and daily lives of the wider community. Our city is made up of
heterosexual marriages, families, farmers, small business owners, outdoor enthusiasts, conservationists, and people of many different beliefs and cultural backgrounds. We are
united by much more than any one social cause—and certainly more than any one aspect ofidentity that unites on sexual preferences.
To designate any symbol that does not represent the full community as the official city flagundermines unity rather than promoting it. I believe we deserve a flag that reflects the heart
of our entire town—not one that prioritizes symbolism tied to a particular movement orgroup.
I strongly urge you to reconsider this action and, at the very least, allow space forcommunity discussion and a vote. This is too significant a decision to be made without the
voices of the people it affects most: the residents of our city.
I would like to be clear that I personally oppose this decision entirely. The pride flag should
never have been in consideration for the official Bozeman city flag.
Thank you for your time and for your service to our community.
Sincerely,
Ashton Connerton
