Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Commissioners, This comment is with regards to: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BOZEMAN, MONTANA, DECLARING THE PRIDE FLAG AND ITS VARIANTS TO BE OFFICIAL FLAGS OF THE CITY OF BOZEMAN. I am a resident of Gallatin County and pay for 2 apartments within the city limits for my 2 MSU students. It would be irresponsible for the City Commission to adopt this resolution. Any support of this resolution shows bias toward a small and politically-motivated faction of our population. Each member of our community is fairly represented by the American, Montana, and Bozeman flags as symbols of freedom, fairness and unity. Unbeknownst to the residents of Gallatin County, in 2022 the City of Bozeman flew the pride flag without undergoing an official process, taking matters into their own hands rather than following the law. Therefore, citing the historical flying of that flag within the resolution points squarely to the questionable allegiance of those who allowed it to happen in the first place. It disrespects the residents of our town and the surrounding areas. The pride flag is a political symbol and does not represent our citizens or even all “LGB….” residents of the community. I feel unsafe to see that flag flying on a government building. Absolutely nothing precludes private citizens and businesses from displaying any flag all over our city, which is appropriately supported by freedom of speech through our Constitution. However, you are elected and appointed representatives of the collective residents and must not stoke divisive behavior. Do not promote the pride flag as a symbol of our great Montana city – vote AGAINST this resolution. Best regards, Suzanne Mackay
