Dear Bozeman Commissioners, Thank you for continuing this important conversation about returning the Progress Pride Flagto Bozeman. I’m writing as a Bozeman resident and veteran to ask that you adopt the Progress PrideFlag and its variations as an official city flag. Throughout my military service, I took an oath—like many others—and dedicated my life toprotecting the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, under Old Glory. She now hangs in my office, flown over our nation’s Capitol—a reminder ofservice, sacrifice, and the ideals I swore to defend. There is no symbol more powerful than the American flag when it comes to representing thedream of freedom, protection, and the promise that everyone deserves dignity and safety—not just on American soil, but as a beacon of hope the world still recognizes. I have seen her handed to grieving mothers and laid gently across coffins. I have seen her flown high over military bases and at the resting places of American service members aroundthe world. Many have made the ultimate sacrifice defending the ideals she represents. Her presence in those places speaks of courage, of loss—and of the deep hope that freedom meanssomething. No flag competes with the American flag. But there are those that stand with her—symbolsthat reflect the very freedoms she represents: dignity, equality, inclusion. Just as the Progress Pride Flag once did here in Bozeman. This isn’t about politics. It’s about people—our neighbors, families, and friends. With state- level bans threatening visibility for LGBTQ+ Montanans, Bozeman has a chance to lead withclarity and courage. By restoring the Progress Pride Flag, we affirm that this city is a place where everyone belongs—and where the values of freedom and safety extend to all. Sincerely, Jen Smith
