Dear Members of the Bozeman City Commission, I’m writing as a resident, Bozeman native and engaged member of the Bozemancommunity to respectfully express my opposition to the proposal of adopting the prideflag as our official city flag. While I recognize that the pride flag may represent values such as strength and progressto some, I believe it is not the right choice to represent the diverse and unique identity ofour city as a whole. A city flag should be a unifying symbol—something that resonatesbroadly with the entire community and reflects the character, history, and spirit ofBozeman itself. The pride flag, as it currently stands, feels more like a campaign or a specific movementrather than a timeless civic emblem. City flags should be enduring and inclusive, notpotentially polarizing or associated with a particular moment or group. Adopting thisflag risks politicizing what should be a shared and neutral symbol. Bozeman is a place with deep roots in Montana’s landscape, culture, and values—something that should be reflected in any symbol chosen to represent it officially. I urgethe commission to consider opening up a broader public design and feedback process ifthere is strong interest in updating or creating a new city flag. I believe such a step wouldlead to a flag that genuinely reflects the spirit of all who call Bozeman home. Thank you for your time Sincerely,Hannah Hathaway
