I am writing as a concerned resident of Bozeman regarding the proposal to adopt the LGBTQ pride flag as our official municipal flag. While I fully support the rights and dignity of LGBTQ individuals and appreciate the important contributions this community makes to our city, I respectfully believe that adopting a flag associated with any specific social or political movement as the official symbol of our municipal government may not be the most unifying choice for all residents. A city flag, in its ideal form, is meant to be a neutral, unifying symbol that represents the entire population—regardless of race, religion, political views, sexual orientation, or gender identity. It should reflect our shared civic identity and common commitment to democratic principles, local heritage, and public service. When a city government adopts a flag that is already widely recognized as representing a particular movement—however well- intentioned—it risks unintentionally alienating those who may not agree with every aspect of that movement or who feel their own values are being overlooked. Moreover, the adoption of any advocacy or identity-based flag as the sole symbol of civic representation sets a precedent. It raises the question of how the city will respond to future requests to adopt flags representing other communities, causes, or ideologies. Let us continue to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for all without compromising the neutrality and representational purpose of our municipal flag. Thank you for considering this perspective. I deeply value our city’s commitment to dialogue and democratic engagement. Respectfully, Christine Stagg
