Dear Commissioners, I am writing as a concerned citizen regarding the proposed resolution to adopt the Pride flag and its variants as official flags of the City of Bozeman. While I fully support the right of every individual to live freely and without discrimination, I believe that adopting a flag representing a specific social or political movement as an official city symbol is not in the best interest of our community. The role of a city flag is to represent all residents—regardless of political affiliation, personal identity, or beliefs. Making the Pride flag an official city emblem risks politicizing what should be a unifying symbol. From a conservative standpoint, government institutions should remain neutral in cultural and ideological debates. Official symbols should reflect shared civic values—such as liberty, community, and self-governance—not align with specific advocacy movements, no matter how well-intentioned. This neutrality is essential to maintaining trust in local government and ensuring that all residents feel equally represented. Furthermore, adopting the Pride flag as an official city flag could set a precedent for endorsing other identity-based or political flags, which may lead to division rather than unity. Our city flag should be a symbol that brings us together, not one that inadvertently excludes or alienates those with differing views. I urge you to consider these concerns and vote against the resolution. Let us celebrate diversity through inclusive community events and respectful dialogue—not through official symbols that risk dividing our community. Thank you for your service and for considering the voices of all Bozeman residents. Sincerely, Vance Simmons Get Outlook for iOS
