July 14, 2025 Bozeman City Commissioners 121 N Rouse Ave Bozeman, MT 59715 Dear Commissioners, I am writing to express my opposition to the proposal that the Pride flag be designated as theofficial flag of the City of Bozeman. I believe that city symbols should represent all residents without elevating a particular groupbased on identity, belief, or lifestyle. While I fully support the right of individuals to live freely and without discrimination, I question whether it is appropriate for the city to formallyadopt a flag that is inherently representative of one specific community — in this case, the LGBTQ+ community, gay pride. Originally, the rainbow flag symbolized gay pride. While it is still rooted in LGBTQ+ identity, it is now said to promote unity, acceptance, and diversity — all of which are valuable ideals. However, the flag also reflects specific social and cultural movements aimed at supporting marginalized groups. In my opinion, it does not represent all people, but rather thoseadvocating for a particular agenda. As someone who identifies as heterosexual, I do not feel the need to celebrate or promote mysexual orientation publicly. I do not seek public recognition or a parade or a flag for my identity, and I believe many residents of Bozeman — from a wide range of backgrounds —feel similarly. We are all equal members of this city, and our shared values, community spirit, and mutual respect are what should unite us — not our differences. Making a flag that represents sexual identity the official symbol of Bozeman risks creating division rather than unity. City symbols should bring people together and reflect our collectiveidentity as Bozeman residents — not focus on personal, sexual, or political affiliations. I respectfully urge you to reconsider this proposal and seek ways to honor and supportdiversity and inclusion without elevating one group above others through official city designations. Thank you for your service to our community and for considering all voices.
