Shepherd - Opposition to Designating the Pride Flag as the Official Flag of BozemanFrom:Darin Shepherd To:Bozeman Public Comment Subject:[EXTERNAL]Opposition to Designating the Pride Flag as the Official Flag of Bozeman Date:Monday, July 14, 2025 10:11:00 AM CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the organization. Dear Bozeman City Commissioners, I am writing as a concerned resident and local business owner to express my strong objection to any proposal that would designate the LGBTQ+ Pride flag as the official flag of the City of Bozeman. This consideration appears to go beyond a gesture of inclusion and enters the realm of promoting a specific political and cultural agenda, which many in our community do not feel accurately represents the values of Bozeman as a whole. Our city is built on the foundations of community, mutual respect, and family. While every individual should absolutely be treated with dignity and respect—regardless of background or identity—adopting a politically charged symbol as our official civic banner risks deepening division rather than promoting unity. Bozeman is home to a diverse population, including families who cherish long-held values rooted in tradition, faith, and community service. Elevating any flag—especially one associated with a particular social or political movement—to represent our entire city sends a message that those who do not subscribe to that movement may be less valued or less welcome. Our official city symbols should reflect common ground—not align with specific ideologies. I urge the commission to focus instead on initiatives that bring people together across different perspectives, rather than adopting symbolic actions that will undoubtedly create unnecessary friction within our community. Thank you for your time and service to Bozeman. I hope you will take these concerns seriously as you consider what best represents all of us. Sincerely, Darin Shepherd 406.451.6926 cell Sit Means Sit Montana
